Whimsical Creations Izzy Lewis Ceramics 2 Class of 2025
For my art show this year I wanted to create something that made me happy and that felt new and unique.I threw five pieces that all have different creative designs on them. I created a cup that has a pig face on it with ears and a tail. Also, I made a cup with different shapes carved into it. Then, I threw a bowl that had different colors of glazes drizzled over it. There is also a cup with three octopus tentacles on it. Finally, I have a cup with a handle that is glazed with different shades of blue. I had the idea to make all these pieces because I wanted to make an original set of pieces that has not been made before, as a set of teapots has. I made all of these pieces by wheel throwing and pulling a handle for one of the cups. Then, I carved the cup of shapes as well as sculpting by scoring and slipping clay to the pieces that needed to be sculpted. The playful and different colors were chosen because they meant to look whimsical, referring to the name of the body of work. I added texture by carving shapes into one of the cups and carving the octopus tentacles on another. I made another cup and bowl smooth because the texture is not supposed to be cohesive for all five pieces. The cohesive element is the whimsical colors or designs. I wanted to represent bright/different colors and unique designs because seeing the work could make people happy when they view it. I would like the viewers to leave with inspiration from my pieces to make ceramics work that they have never seen before. I want them to want to make ceramics work that they feel is original.
